𦷠February Is National Pet Dental Health Month ā Letās Talk About the Real Truth Behind Your Petās Teeth

Letās be honestāthis topic still needs some myth-busting. Dental disease remains the most common (and most ignored) medical problem I see in dogs and cats. And while awareness has improved, misinformation has also grown. So letās update this conversation with what we now knowāand what truly helps pets keep their teeth (and health) longer. š¾
ā TRUTH #1: Pets Donāt Brush Their Own Teeth⦠and Most Humans Donāt Either š¬
Dogs and cats donāt floss. They donāt rinse. And the vast majority of pet parentsādespite the best intentionsāarenāt brushing their pet’s teeth daily. That means bacteria builds up fast, leading to:
- Plaque
- Tartar
- Gingivitis
- Periodontal disease
- Painful infections hiding below the gumline
Bad breath isnāt ānormal.ā Itās a medical warning sign. šØ
ā TRUTH #2: What You See Is Not the Whole Problem š
Hereās the part most people never realize: over 60% of dental disease lives under the gums, where you canāt see it.
I made this video specifically to show pet parents what teeth look like below the gumlineāand why so-called non-anesthetic dental cleanings do not address the root of the problem (literally):
š„ Watch here: https://youtu.be/iX8YF7lrXaI
No anesthesia = no X-rays = no ability to diagnose or treat true disease.
ā TRUTH #3: āAnesthesia-Free Dentistryā Is NOT Medicine š§
I know it sounds appealing. Less scary. Less expensive.
But hereās the truth:
- You cannot clean under the gumline in an awake pet
- You cannot take dental X-rays
- You cannot treat infection, bone loss, or loose teeth
- You cannot control pain or stress
Thatās cosmetic dentistryānot healthcare.
ā TRUTH #4: Most Pets Need Professional Dental Care by Age 3 š¶š±
Just like people, pets need regular cleanings. For many:
- Once yearly dental cleanings are ideal
- Some breeds (small dogs especially) need twice yearly care due to genetics and anatomy
Delaying dental treatment allows bacteria to:
ā”ļø Destroy bone
ā”ļø Loosen teeth
ā”ļø Enter the bloodstream
ā”ļø Damage the heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs
Left untreated, dental disease can be life-threatening.
š„ Warning: This video shows how severe dental disease can become when ignored:

ā TRUTH #5: Home Care Matters ā But It Must Be Realistic š
Yes, daily brushing is still the gold standard. But letās be practicalā¦
š Over 90% of pet owners will not brush daily (and thatās okayāwe work with real life, not against it).
Thatās why we now recommend MaxiGuard Dental Wipes š§»
They:
- Are quick and easy
- Reduce bacterial load
- Improve gum health
- Fit into real routines
Theyāre not magicābut theyāre far better than doing nothing.
